First, the availability of clean and plentiful water supply has a
direct effect on health. The value of the future water harvest is
much greater than the value of the logs being taken from water catchments
across Victoria.
Second, forests are the greatest repositories of biodiversity, and
as such are a source of medicines, a focus for medical research and
vital for human food security. An intact native forest system is essential
for the continuance of native wildlife.
Third, the destruction of forests by industrial scale logging is
a factor in global warming with all its attendant health threats.
Finally, in a society where depression is endemic, the psychological
value of natural forests as places of spiritual regeneration for all
cannot be overestimated.
